Fire Scene Documentation & Evidence Collection

This eight hour course is designed for Crime Scene Investigators and Fire Investigators who document and collect evidence at fire scenes. Processing fire scenes requires a different approach than other types of crime scenes. Special equipment and training is required to properly document, collect and preserve items of evidentiary value at these scenes. Student will learn what additional photographs need to be taken at a fire scene compared to a normal crime scenes and how to package evidence specific to these scenes to ensure chain of custody, prevent contamination and preserve the integrity of the evidence. Low light/no light photography techniques will be discussed as well as how to manipulate camera settings to deal with various environmental conditions at a fire scene. Student will learn how to generate fire scene sketches and diagrams and learn about specific safety hazards encountered at a fire scene. Equipment and PPE specific to fire scenes will be discusses in-depth.


Terminal Learning Objective: Students will be able to demonstrate how to document and collect evidence from a fire scene through properly exposed photographs and proven evidence collection techniques ensuring the integrity of the evidence for investigations and court.

Required Equipment: Each student should bring their agency issued digital camera, batteries, battery charger, tripod and any additional camera related equipment they have. Camera batteries should be fully charged prior to the start of class. Cameras can be shared between multiple people from the same agency. Students should also bring any other fire scene evidence documentation or collection kits issued by their agency.
