EVIDENCE AND PROPERTY STORAGE: MANAGEMENT & DOCUMENTATION

Trainings

Evidence and Property Storage:
Management and Documentation

This two day course introduces the students to proper storage management and documentation. Evidence storage is one of the most critical responsibilities within law enforcement agencies, yet it is often assigned with little or no functional training. Unlike traditional business storage facilities, evidence management involves complex transactional procedures that demand specialized knowledge, precision, and accountability. This seminar is designed to equip participants with the skills, policies, and management strategies necessary to operate a professional evidence storage facility in full compliance with nationally recognized standards.

Criminal prosecution efforts, an agency’s public reputation, and the careers of personnel from leadership down to custodians can all be irreparably harmed by lapses in evidence storage management. This seminar ensures that participants leave with the knowledge and tools to continuously and appropriately manage this assignment, preventing costly mistakes and reinforcing professional accountability.

Terminal Learning Objective:

  • National Best-Practices: Implementation of standardized procedures for intake, cataloging, auditing, and disposal of evidence.
  • Accredited Policies: Alignment with CALEA (Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies), IAPE (International Association for Property and Evidence), and other recognized frameworks.
  • Proper Management Techniques: Chain-of-custody documentation, secure storage protocols, and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Systematic Oversight: Developing accountability systems to ensure continuous compliance and operational transparency.
  • Transactional Procedures: Mastering the unique workflows that distinguish evidence storage from other storage operations.

Target Audience:

  • Chiefs, Sheriffs, and Command Staff
  • Evidence Custodians and Property Officers
  • Supervisors overseeing storage operations
  • Administrative staff responsible for compliance and audits
