Crime Scene Investigation (Level 1)

This forty hour basic crime scene investigation course combines lecture and practical exercises to provide the Crime Scene Investigator with the knowledge and skills necessary to process basic crimes scenes effectively. They will learn how to systematically and methodically process and document crime scenes for fingerprints, DNA and biological evidence, impression/toolmark and trace evidence. This class includes the Police & Crime Scene Photography course. Other topics include: safety, process methodology, scene security, CSI equipment, sketching/diagraming, legal considerations, evidence packaging and chain of custody.

 

This training culminates with the students processing staged crime scenes and presenting their work to their peers.


Terminal Learning Objective: Students will be able to demonstrate how to systematically and methodically process a crime scene by identifying, documenting, collecting and preserving items of evidentiary value.

Required Equipment: Each student should bring their agency issued digital camera, batteries, battery charger, tripod and any additional camera related equipment they have. Camera batteries should be fully charged prior to the start of class. Students should also bring their fingerprint kits and a DNA/Trace kit if they have one.
